Oxford! Friday, May 27

Today we went to Oxford.  After a 2 hour train ride, Tim guided us throughout the town, to the most interesting places, I'm sure.  We saw the place in the street where Thomas Cranmer (Archbishop of Canterbury) was burned at the stake for refusing to flip-flop religions again at the whim of the new Queen, Mary I.  The place is still marked in the street with this cross.

We walked around, looking at the different buildings of the college.  Christ Church was especially wonderful.  Charles Dodgson (a.k.a. Lewis Carroll) wrote Alice's Adventures in Wonderland based on the Dean's daughters and the area surrounding Christ Church.  There is a stained glass window there with his characters there.  The hall at Christ Church is now better known for its use in the Harry Potter movies.  The great hall in the movies is modeled after their hall.

We also saw the pub where the "Inklings" met.  This is the group of writers that included Tolkien and C.S. Lewis.  I could hardly breathe!  The whole day was a wonderful fantasy of learning that I feel emotionally satiated and spiritually peaceful.  The lovely stone and green fields of Oxford will be with me always.

Are we excited to be here!

Tim prepares us for the day.

Olivia looking lovely.

This is near the burn-at-the-stake site, and the darkened bit is allegedly scorch marks from that fire. Hmm...

IVY!!!!!!!

Sheldonian Theatre.  Place for matriculation, graduation, etc.

Up to the cupola, through awesome creepy attic space.

From the cupola, the rooftops of Oxford.

Me, Andy, Nathan, Laura and Hannah.

I love this kind of ribbing so much.

These represent the names of donors.

Friends against the honey-colored stone.  The stone is very specific, and called Cotswold stone.

Intellect meets Intellect.  Ho ho!

The Radcliffe Camera.

Stuart loves it here, too.

Meat pies!

Sorry for this gross picture.

Oh dear, that was good.  Andy and I agree.

No, we're already full!

This must be the Green Man, right?

Christ Church

Dear philosopher and recently "Lost".  :)

St. George and the dragon window.

Awesome woodwork!

This stained class is close to 12th century, called the Beckett window.

You should recognize these stairs from the first Harry Potter movie.

And this hall...

Alice in Wonderland window.

Lewis Carroll

This is the old path to a cemetery, now the botanical gardens.

Students walk over this air-bridge to exams and it's modeled after a Venetian bridge that the condemned would use on their way to execution.

Today, those who kiss under this air-bridge are meant to love forever.

This blackboard at the science museum has Einstein's chalk writing still on it!

The Hunt, by Uccello.  This painting was an early exploration of perspective.  See how the trees and dogs get smaller farther back?  Revolutionary!

Guy Fox's lantern.  Not even kidding.

The Inkling's Pub, The Eagle and Child

So happy.

Tim reads us a poem.
